Inspiring the Next Generation of Digital Innovators in Islington

At Digit<all, we’re passionate about empowering young people with the digital skills they need to thrive in the modern world. Thanks to the generous support of 8x8’s Social Value Funding, we recently had the privilege of delivering an exciting day of coding workshops to four Key Stage 2 classes at William Tynedale School in Islington.

The sessions were led by our incredible Digit<all ambassadors, who worked tirelessly to create an engaging and inspiring learning experience for both students and teachers. Using the versatile micro:bit, pupils explored real-world problems and learned how technology can make a meaningful difference.

Year 4 – Tackle Coding Workshop 🏃

In our Tackle Coding workshop, the year 4 students built a digital pedometer using micro:bits, designing code that utilised the micro:bit’s LED screen to count their steps. They tested their prototype in an enjoyable energetic session in the school hall, bringing their creations to life. Along the way, they learned about variables, a concept that underpins much of the more advanced programming techniques they’ll learn in the future, as well as the inputs and outputs required by a computer system. This was all delivered through the lens of elite sportspeople and the data that they collect and analyse to monitor and develop their performance.

Year 5 – Bird Watch Workshop 🐦

Year 5 pupils joined our Bird Watch workshop where they explored how coding and data can help protect habitats and conserve wildlife. They began by using micro:bits to explore radio transmission, sending a “duck” across the room. Next, they worked together to find and record birds hidden in the classroom. The activities highlighted how technology can improve the world, teaching programming concepts like sequence, selection, and iteration. Pupils also built resilience through debugging and strengthened teamwork by sharing discoveries.

Teachers benefited too, gaining insights into engaging learners with physical computing and developing skills to support digital literacy. The school received 30 micro:bits, allowing all pupils to continue coding.

"Today was so amazing and we would really like to send our biggest thank you to Tig and Ollie for such a super day! It was also fabulous to have both Tig and Ollie share some resources and extra ideas on how we can further develop the children's learning! We would love to have you all back in the future.”

Teacher

We’re incredibly grateful to 8x8 for their support, which made it possible to bring this impactful experience to the students and teachers of William Tynedale School. Together, we’re helping young people build the skills they need to shape a brighter future.
